This strand focuses on the writing process and writing-to-learn strategies as well as the intentional use of purposeful oral language and listening activities to enrich and expand students’ abilities to participate in academic discourse. In addition, it will emphasize the AVID fundamentals of inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading as tools for developing and scaffolding these skills, from foundational to advanced levels, via a rigorous curriculum, with an emphasis on college readiness. This strand is designed for English Language Arts teachers (grades 6–12) who have some experience with AVID concepts and methodologies.
