This strand will focus on the writing process and writing-to-learn strategies, as well as the intentional use of purposeful oral language and listening activities to enrich and expand students’ abilities to participate in academic discourse. In addition, it will emphasize the AVID fundamentals of Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading as tools for developing and scaffolding these skills, from foundational to advanced levels, via a rigorous curriculum, with an emphasis on college readiness. Overall, it is designed for ELA teachers (grades 6–12) who have some experience with AVID concepts and methodologies.
